What is Bakelite? Bakelite is a type of artificial resin found by a Belgian chemist in the early 20th century. It is a type of plastic that has not been found for long years. Bakelite, one of the synthetic polymers produced for the first time, is one of the most important types of polymers that have become very popular as it does not transmit electricity and is resistant to melting and destruction up to a certain temperature.

Its production is very high and its usage areas are too widespread, which led to many praises. The versatility of the bakelite plastic and the fact that it was first made of artificial plastic helped many of these praises. In addition to this, different derivatives of bakelite have a large number of industrial works and commercial applications.


Bakelite plastic surpasses other types of plastic particularly thanks to its numerous features and durability compared to other types of plastic. The exact name of the bakelite resin is “Phenol Formaldehyde Resin”. The use of this resin in commercial areas is called “Bakelite”. The chemical use of bakelite is called “Polyoxybenzyl Methylene Glycol Anhydride”.

It is practical and easy to manufacture and process. In addition to being a thermosetting plastic, it is a plastic that can be liquefied and then processed by forging when heated again. It permanently hardens and retains its shape when cooled after the treatment is complete. This way, items can be made and used as desired.

Bakelite does not transmit electric and electrical currents with the properties of various elements that it contains. It is resistant against heat and does not burn to a certain high temperature under normal conditions. It is also resistant to chemical actions. It is the first synthetic plastic formulated in the Plastic Age by Leo Baekeland, a chemist from New York, USA in early 20th century.

It is a product that occurs with the elimination reaction of phenol with formaldehyde. Resin is a type of substance belonging to a family of solid or semi-solid viscous substances that are obtained as exudation from certain plants or prepared by polymerization of simple molecules.


The dielectric constant of bakelite varies between 4.4 and 5.4. Found by the American Chemical Society, bakelite has an important place in the history as the first formulated synthetic plastic in the world. Furthermore, this material has a significant influence and has been declared as a National Historic Chemical Landmark. Bakelite is a plastic used in the manufacturing many products, from telephone receivers to electrical appliances, jewelry, pot stems and chess pieces. It is conveniently called the Material of Thousand Uses. The trademark rights for the use of bakelite in commerce were obtained by a German company called Bakelite AG. Since the various characteristics and applications of bakelite are very common, it is available and used in most of the materials used in our daily lives.

Despite the question “What is bakelite?” in the early 20th century, the demand for this multifaceted and affordable material has increased, while the plastic production peaked. It is one of the oldest and also most adaptive types of plastic. Bakelite is a substance made with components formed by phenol and formaldehyde. Bakelite, found almost in most parts of human life for a century, is used in jewelry, toy appliances, and electrical equipment as an insulation material. It is very popular due to the fact that it is an insulator.

Bakelite is used in the houses for decades and is available in almost every part of the houses from ground to the ceiling and even in corridors and beams and used in several desired collections. Most antiquarians not only use bakelite as a valuable part of their collections, but also enriched their valuable loots and ores.
